This charming study depicts Sir Thomas Lawrence's late 18th century portrait portrait of welsh actress Sarah Simmons as 'Mrs Haller' in Kotzebue's 'The Stranger'.
Sarah Simmons was born a family of theatre professionals in Brecon, Wale. After marrying actor William Siddons at the age of 18 she travelled the country with a small troupe of actors. Her performance in in Bath's Theatre Royal was wear she finally started to gain adoration from the public, with her Lady Macbeth being widely recognised as an outstanding performance.
Her beauty captured the attention of many of Britain's most renowned artists with Gainsborough, Lawrence and Reynolds all completing portraits of her during her acting career.
Unsigned. Presented in a gilt frame with a reeded running patterns.
On canvas on stretchers.Condition
There has been some restoration to the surface of the painting. There is some craquelure to the surface. Light scuffing to the edges of the frame.
