Print made by Gerald Philip Robinson, who has signed the print in pencil bottom right. Portrait of a young woman in 18th century dress, whole-length, sitting on a bank with bushes and trees behind, holding a miniature in her right hand, the lace of her skirts in her left, with a long-haired dog next to her on the right; after Gainsborough. Mezzotint on chine collé. Published by: Henry Graves & Co. Signed. On chine-collé.

Condition

Soft creasing to outer margin of page. 2.5cm tear along right edge and another 2cm L-shaped tear along bottom section. Main image is unaffected by these tears. Scattered foxing present, typical for a print of this age.

Artist Biography

ROBINSON Gerald Philip 1858-1942 Little is known about this mezzotint artist born the son of Sir John Charles Robinson (1824-1913), artist, museum curator and collector. He was elected an Associate of the RE in 1892 and in 1893 his work was shown at the Chicago World’s Fair. He showed at the RA, RBSA and at the GG. In 1902 some of his work was published in the Encyclopedia Britannica. Robinson was the first President of the Society of Mezzotint Engravers and was appointed as Mezzotint Engraver to Queen Victoria and to King Edward VII. Museums Sheffield has examples.
