Artist Biography
Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was a prominent English painter and one of the most influential figures in 18th-century British art. Born in Plympton, Devon, he demonstrated an early talent for drawing and studied under portraitist Thomas Hudson in London. After a formative trip to Italy, where he absorbed the techniques of the Old Masters, Reynolds returned to England and established himself as the leading portrait painter of his time. Reynolds was a founding member and the first president of the Royal Academy of Arts (1768), using his position to promote the "Grand Style" in painting - an idealised approach inspired by classical art. His portraits, often of British aristocracy and intellectuals, combined realism with classical grandeur. Notable works include portraits of Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, and members of the royal family. He was also a prolific writer and thinker on art, delivering a series of influential "Discourses" on painting that helped shape academic art theory in Britain. Knighted by King George III in 1769, Reynolds remained a dominant cultural figure until his death in 1792.
