A fine engraved copy of 'The Four Continents' by Peter Paul Rubens, formerly attributed to Maaten de Vos. The painting depicts the female personifications of the four continents (Europe, Asia, Africa, and America) with the male personifications of their respective major rivers (the Danube, the Ganges, the Nile, and the Río de la Plata).
Inscribed in plate: "Peint par Martin De Vos," "Dessine par Borel," "Grave par De Longville, Grave du Roy," with the title "Les Fleuves de la Galerie du Palais Royal."
Signed in plate by the engravers Joseph de Longueil and Antoine Borel. On laid.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and foxing to the paper. The print has been laid to another sheet of paper. The artwork has been previously trimmed and repaired, with the lower border refixed to the artwork.
