Description

A finely painted copy of Pauline Auzou's 1810 Maternal Fear, showing a young mother kneeling beside a broken sapling, clutching her son in fear and astonishment. At lower left, a ribbon-tied tree may reference a Livonian birth custom (Livonia corresponds to modern Lithuania and Estonia). Exhibited at the French Salon in 1814, the original was praised for its sentiment and skill. This copy is executed with care and, though unfinished, remains very appealing. Signed indistinctly beneath the mount. Presented in a black lacquered frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor foxing. Marks and scuffs to the frame.
