Artist Biography
Norman Wilkinson (1878-1971) was born in Cambridge, but In 1895 his family moved to Southsea, Hampshire. Wilkinson attended the Portsmouth and Southsea School of Art, it was here that he was introduced to Jerome K. Jerome, the author and publisher of Idler and Today, soon after he began to work as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News. Wilkinson soon gained fame as a painter of ships and became an innovative poster artist with the work he produced for the regional railway companies. During World War I he served in the navy and did on-the-spot drawings for his Dardanelles book. In 1917 he was a co-inventor of dazzle ship camouflage and in 1939 camouflaged airfields for the RAF. He is arguably best known for his marine art.
