After Kitagawa Utamaro (c.1753-1806) Japanese Woodblock - Women and Mosquito Net

Description

A very fine Japanese woodblock depicting a young mother hanging a mosquito net to protect herself and her child. This image is part of a larger composition which comes from the 1801 illustrated book "Picture Book: Flowers of the Four Seasons, Volume 1", by the artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806). This is possibly a later print by a follower of Utamaro. The style and imagery is very similar, however there are slight differences in the background and addition of the female figure at the lower left. Unsigned. On laid.

Condition

The condition is generally very good for a picture of this age. The paper is quite delicate with areas of creasing. Most noticeably at the lower edge, 6 cm from the bottom a horizontal crease stretches across the page. However this is not very visible and has been flattened over time. The colour retention is also very good with the red ink still very bright.
