Description

A very fine Japanese woodblock depicting a young woman hanging a mosquito net to protect herself and her friends. This interesting image appears to be an amalgamation of two different prints by the Japanese artist Kitagawa Utamaro. The standing lady comes from his 18th century print 'Woman with a Visitor', and the crouching lady comes from the 1801 illustrated book "Picture Book: Flowers of the Four Seasons, Volume 1".This is possibly a later print by a follower of Utamaro. The style and imagery are very similar, however there are slight differences in composition. Unsigned. On laid.

Condition

The condition is generally good for a picture of this age. The paper is quite delicate with areas of minor creasing that has been flattened out over time. With areas of slight discolouration.

Size

36.6 x 23.2cm (14.4" x 9.1")
