After Kitagawa Utamaro (c.1753-1806) Japanese Woodblock - Approaching Storm

Description

A very fine Japanese woodblock depicting a man closing the screen door, to protect his home from the approaching thunderstorm. This image is part of a larger composition which comes from the 1801 illustrated book "Picture Book: Flowers of the Four Seasons, Volume 1", by the artist Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806). This is possibly a later print by a follower of Utamaro. The style and imagery is very similar, however there are slight differences in the background and addition of the female figure with infant at the lower right. Unsigned. On laid.

Condition

The condition is generally good for a picture of this age. The paper is quite delicate with areas of creasing. At some point the image has been removed from a backing card/mount or book and there are signs of glue residue on the reverse. With discolouration and foxing. Faded inscription on the reverse.
