Description

A sun-drenched street scene depicting the funerary complex of Sultan Qaytbay in Cairo, constructed in the fifteenth century. The artist captures the ornate richness of the Islamic architecture in warm ochres and dusty red tones. The work is signed "G. Garnier” to the lower right, and is after a painting by Karl Kaufmann (1843-1902/05), who worked under the pseudonym Henri Carnier. The work is well presented in a vintage gilt frame featuring a fluted cove with lamb’s-tongue and foliate running patterns. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and surface dirt. Areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some cracking to the ornamentation and slight separation to the corner joints.

Size

34.5 x 54.5cm (13.6" x 21.5")
