After a work of 1816 by John Constable (1776–1837), this coastal view depicts Bowleaze Cove in Dorset, looking west from Osmington. The Jordan stream trickles over the sand, with Furzy Cliff and Jordan Hill beyond. Constable painted the scene whilst staying with his friend the Reverend John Fisher during his honeymoon with his wife Maria Bicknell. Well presented in a gilt frame with foliate corner ornamentation. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and areas of craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
