Description

A finely detailed engraving after 'The Lady of Charity' by the French genre, history, and portrait painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze (1725-1805). The scene depicts a wealthy lady encouraging her young daughter to give alms to a dying elderly man. The engraving was published by Esnauts and Rapilly, a Parisian print publishing partnership founded by Jacques Esnault and Michel Rapilly active in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Discolouration and light foxing to the paper. Tears around the edges of the paper, which have been repaired. Loss to the upper right.
