A very fine, evocative landscape setting in oil completed in 1889, after an original c.1670 Dutch Golden Age painting by the artist Jan Wijnants (c.1635-1684), entitled 'A Landscape with Two Dead Trees, and Two Sportsmen with Dogs on a Sandy Road'. The original work hangs in the National Gallery, London.
The artist has captured the original with an added sense of impressionistic detail, casting subtle light on the surroundings. A variety of brushwork conveys both texture and detail; a faithfully bucolic, calm composition.
Well-presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame, with leaf and berry moulding, moulded palmette cove, beading and a plain gilt slip. There is a canvas stamp to the reverse from 'Reeves & Sons, 13 Cheapside, London', dating to the 1880's, and a label from William Whiteley's 'Fine Art Department, 157 Queen's Road, W.'. A partially legible inscription to the upper canvas stretcher reads 'After...National Gallery, 1889'.
Unsigned dated and inscribed. On canvas on stretchers.There is surface discolouration to the varnish, expected for a picture of this age. There is also some stable craquelure to the paint layer, and light abrasion to the edges of the canvas. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The frame has some areas of restoration, and a small loss to the moulding at the upper left corner.
