A striking nineteenth-century copy after Jacob Jordaens' (1593-1678) 'The Satyr and the Peasant', a subject to which he returned regularly. The scene depicts a tale from Aesop's Fables in which a satyr takes pity upon a man starving in the forest. The satyr is shocked that the man blows on his hands to warm them, yet blows on his food to cool it down. The satyr declares that he cannot trust a man "who can blow hot and cold from the same mouth". The expression "to blow hot and cold" derives from this fable. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. Unsigned. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and areas of craquelure. The canvas has been laid to board and overpainted in some areas. Slight warping to the board. Wrinkling to the canvas along the left and lower edges. Scuffs and small losses to the frame.
