This charismatic 18th century coloured stipple engraving depicts a family in an impoverished state. One woman holds her sewing close to her face, straining to see due to poor eyesight in the dimly lit room. The man looks longingly into the distance, dreaming of better days when his family were better off. The artist suggests that their suffering is a result of their idleness and overindulgence of extravagant goods. Printed by W. Ward after George Morland original painting.
