A very fine Japanese woodblock after the artist Fujikawa Tamenobu (fl.1890-1910), entitled 'Tennoji'. From the 53 Stages of the Tokaido, this scene depicts a Japanese arch with figures in a street, and a pagoda tower in the distance. There is an inscription in the upper right corner.
Well-presented in a blue decorative mount with a black frame with rounded corners, as shown. There is a label to the reverse from the Wah Cheong picture framers in Hong Kong.
Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.In fine condition overall. There is some minor surface discolouration. The frame has some minor scuffing and surface marks, as shown.

Fujikawa Tamenobu (fl.1890-1910) was a woodblock artist working at the turn of the century. Little is known about this Meiji-period artist. He is best known for a series of prints depicting the travels of Yajirobe and Kitahachi, the popular protagonists of Jippensha Ikku’s Tokaidochu Hizakurige (or Shanks’ Mare). The famous tale, released in two volumes in 1802 and 1822 respectively, follows these comic heroes as they journey from Edo to Kyoto along the Tokaido road.
