Dickens Series depicting the literary characters Captain Cuttle, Trotty Veck, Jingle and Mr. Pickwick, originally painted in 1912. Printed in 1927 by the James Buchanan Company (whisky distillers) in London as a promotional opportunity. Signed in plate. Condition is typical for pictures of this age including some discolouration.

Collection Information

James Buchanan, 1st baron Woolavington (1849-1935) was a British businessman, philanthropist and race horse owner and breeder. The idea of commissioning original artwork by popular artists and illustrators was initiated by Pears Soaps in the 1970s. The popularity of Dickens characters would have seemed ideal for promotional purposes for a distillery such as James Buchanan's Company. Frank Reynolds (1876-1953) was a British artist who regularly contributed to 'Punch' magazine together with illustrating such Charles Dickens books as 'David Copperfield, 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'The Old Curiosity Shop'. This portfolio of Dickens characters immortalised by Frank Reynolds was owned by the James Buchanan Company and in 1927 they gave their permission for this one time collection to be gravured as a promotional opportunity.
