A truly masterful copy of original painting by the French Rococo painter, Francois Lemoyne. The scene shows story from Greek mythology: The Abduction Of Europa. The story goes, that Europa, a beautiful Phoenician princess is abducted by Zeus in the form of a gentle white bull, while she is picking flowers. He swims her across the ocean on his back to the island of Crete where he makes her his lover.
The artist has rendered this copy with elegance and puts a contemporary, Romanticism twist on the original. The painting is unsigned and presented in a contemporary gilt frame with slim linen slip.
On canvas laid to board.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is some bubbling to some areas of the canvas where it has been laid down to the board. There is a scratch to the paint in the upper right quadrant There is a split to the surface of the frame in the lower left corner.
