A delicate hand coloured lithograph after the well-known painter David Roberts RA (1796-1864), entitled 'Fountain of Siloam, Valley of Jehoshaphat'. A female figure stands at the top of a stone staircase, descending into a cavern. Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame and blue-grey velvet mount with gilt beading, as shown. Unsigned and inscribed. On wove.

Condition

In very good condition for a picture of this age including some discolouration and light foxing. The frame is in fine condition.

Artist Biography

David Roberts RA (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
