A delicate hand coloured lithograph after the well-known painter David Roberts RA (1796-1864), entitled 'The Dead Sea looking towards Moab'. The dead sea can be seen in the distance, with a clifftop settlement near the foreground. Inscribed with the artist's name and 'April 4th 1839' in the print. Handsomely presented in a gilt wooden frame and plum velvet mount with gilt beading, as shown. Unsigned dated and inscribed. On wove.

Condition

In very good condition for a picture of this age. There is some light foxing to the page, and some trapped dirt behind the glazing. The frame has only minor scuffing and surface marks.

Artist Biography

David Roberts RA (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter. He is especially known for a prolific series of detailed lithograph prints of Egypt and the Near East that he produced from sketches he made during long tours of the region (1838–1840). These and his large oil paintings of similar subjects made him a prominent Orientalist painter. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1841.
