After Antoine Coypel (1661-1722), early 18th century, oil on canvas. The painting depicts a scene from Book Eight of Virgil's Aeneid, showing Venus bringing arms to Aeneas. Once war with the Rutuli became inevitable, Aeneas enlisted the Tuscans as allies. Venus urged Vulcan, her husband, to forge weapons for her son to ensure his safety and victory, and the painting shows her presenting them to him. The new helmet is worn by one of the cupids, whilst others surround the shield, which is emblazoned with images of Rome's future history. The work is beautifully presented in a high-quality frame decorated with acanthus scrolls and foliate motifs. Unsigned. On canvas.
Condition
The work retains its original character and period patina, with some natural darkening of varnish consistent with age. Fine craquelure is observed throughout the paint surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration and retouching. The canvas has been relined. The frame has minor surface wear, including small chips and scuffs. The centre ornament to the lower rail has previously cracked and been reglued. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.
