A sensitive Dutch still life depicting a glazed earthenware jug, a long clay pipe resting across a small cigar box, and a stub of candle burnt out in a brass chamberstick. Warm browns and ochres dominate, while natural light carefully picks out the white of the pipe and the dull shine of the brass. Signed lower right. The painting is well presented in a modern gilt effect frame with a beaded running pattern. On canvas.
Condition
Inspection under UV light reveals minor areas of overpainting. There is a small surface scratch in the lower right-hand quadrant, near the base of the chamberstick. The frame has minor surface wear. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
