Adolphe Albert Rey was a French painter. The son of a town mayor, he was schooled in Bourgoin, where he formed a lifelong friendship with the painter Victor Charreton (1864–1936), who became his mentor and encouraged his work. Rey pursued a military career in the infantry beginning in 1884, training as an officer at the Saint-Maixent military school, and was promoted to captain in 1904. A lung ailment around 1911 brought him back to the Bourgoin area, where he devoted himself increasingly to painting. At Charreton's invitation, he made three stays at Murol in the Puy-de-Dôme between 1915 and 1918. He is known for landscapes of the Dauphiné region and the snowy scenery of Auvergne, as well as still life and portraits, working in both oil and watercolour. A private and modest man, he largely painted for himself, and his work was rediscovered and celebrated decades after his death.
