A fine oil painting by listed artist Abraham Hulk Junior, depicting a river landscape with a figure on a boat, and cottages in the distance. This painting is a great example of Hulk Junior's sensitivity to light and colour in his portrayal of landscapes, as well as his realism. Signature to the bottom right hand corner. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and paint loss to the edges, which can be hidden with framing. Some areas of craquelure. Inspection under UV light shows restoration work to the upper right and lower right hand quadrants of the painting. Visible restoration patches to the reverse that have been fully restored. There is a small horizontal dent to the canvas at the upper left stretchers line.

Artist Biography

Abraham Hulk Junior (1851-1922), also known as Abraham Hulk the Younger, was a British artist known for his charming paintings of the English countryside. He was taught by his father, a famed maritime painter, Abraham Hulk the Elder. The younger Hulk developed a realistic approach to landscapes, displaying sensitivity to light and colour on his canvases. Born in 1851 in the Netherlands, the artist spent the majority of his life working in England and depicting its environments, though he did travel back to his native country periodically. Before his death in 1922 in Nottingham, United Kingdom, he garnered acclaim for his pastoral scenes through exhibitions in London at the Royal Academy, and the Royal Society of British Artists.
