A truly beautiful oil rendering of the ruins of Tintern Abbey. Tintern Abbey was founded on 9 May 1131 by Walter de Clare, Lord of Chepstow. It is situated adjacent to the village of Tintern in Monmouthshire, on the Welsh bank of the River Wye. The overgrown ruins are dramatically set in an expansive landscape under a red sunset, reflected in the meandering river flowing by in the foreground, off into the distant hills at the horizon. Painted during WW1, this scene seems to be a romanticised ideal of peace and normality of the countryside, while the destruction of war raged on elsewhere. The artist has signed and dated to the lower left corner. The painting has been presented in a substantial gilt frame with slip.
On canvas.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor dirtying to the surface. The frame has general light scuffing and scratches to the surface.
