A.S - Framed 1856 Oil Landscape with Figures and River

Description

A very fine mid 19th century oil depicting a panoramic landscape with figures and a small village. This classical landscape scene is delicately painted and well composed, embodying the romantic continental landscapes of past centuries. The artist has depicted three figures in the foreground, seemingly in conversation. The two women are sat on the ground, while a gentleman stands beside them, propped up with his walking stick. A small village can be seen in the distance, which has a distinctly continental appearance. There is an old gallery label on the reverse, which is unfortunately torn. Well presented in a gilt frame with scrolling leaf detail. Signed and dated. On panel.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration caused by the varnish and areas of light craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals some areas of overpainting, however these are minor touch ups, mainly in the sky area. Well presented in a gilt frame with acanthus leaf detail.
