A. Mathot - Framed Mid 19th Century Oil Cattle at the River

Description

This magnificent mid 19th century landscape depicts a tranquil riverside scene with a watermill nestled amongst verdant trees. In the foreground, a drover prepares to herd a small group of cattle across the river. The painting is beautifully presented in a substantial gilt frame with decorative ornamentation. Signed 'A. Mathot' to the lower right and dated 1836. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Previous canvas repairs can be seen verso. There is craquelure to the surface of the painting. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration and overpainting. The surface painting looks to have been previously cleaned and revarnished. Slight impressions in the canvas caused by the reverse stretcher bars. Light wear to the modern gilt effect frame. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
