This intimate still life depicts a carefully arranged composition of dark grapes alongside an apple and greengages. Kingsley renders the scene against a warm, earthy background that exemplifies the classical tradition of Dutch Golden Age painting. In the lower right, a delicate butterfly symbolises the fleeting nature of life. The painting is beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with a palmette cove and beaded running pattern. Signed 'A. Kingsley' lower left and dated 1879. On canvas.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals minor restoration and areas of overpainting. A small canvas tear has been fully repaired to the reverse. The ornate frame shows signs of wear to include small chips, marks and stable cracking. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
