A very fine late 19th Century landscape in oil on board, by the artist A. Ducrest. The overall composition indicates a clear influence of the Picturesque movement, and the related aesthetic ideals that arose from the late 18th Century onwards.
The artist has chosen to depict two figures in a wider expansive landscape, with the towering mass of the mountain behind creating drama and contrast with the river estuary below. Ducrest has created a balance between realism and impressionistic elements, with both broader open brush strokes and more finely detailed blended areas.
Handsomely presented in an original 19th Century gilt wooden frame with ornate mouldings, including a leaf and berry running pattern and acanthus leaf cove, as shown.
Signed. On board.In very good condition overall. There is some slight foxing to the upper right quadrant of the picture, and overall discolouration expected for a picture of this age. The frame has some minor losses to the moulding, and scuffing to the corners, as shown.
