Artist Biography
A.D. Bell (1884-1966) was a pseudonym used by the listed British artist Wilfred Knox. Knox used the A.D Bell alias extensively when producing paintings for an art dealer in Birmingham where he was born. Using the pseudonym A.D. Bell, Knox specialised in paintings of Clippers and other nautical scenes working primarily in watercolours and gouache. Knox was also an engineer by trade and served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War. He painted World War I fighter planes as well as Venetian scenes. Another artist, Horace Hammond, also used the name A.D. Bell as an alias but Hammond did not paint ships in the style of Knox.
