Description

A carefully coloured and gilded quatrain from The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam by Edward Fitzgerald (1809-1883). With a fine floral border, the artist has produced this illustration in the style of an illuminated manuscript. The quatrain reads 'Alas, that spring should vanish with the rose! That youth's sweet-scented manuscript should close! The nightingale that in the branches sang, Ah, whence and whither flown again, who knows!' Unsigned. On wove.
