Description
This emotive watercolour study depicts a mother in despair after receiving a letter informing of her of a fatality that was most likely her husband. Struck with grief she falls to her bedside while her infant clasps the letter, blissfully unaware of the situation. The withered plant in the window and fallen pendant both show signs of death and loss. Like on the reverse attributes the study to William Dobson. While we doubt this provenance the style shows elements of inspiration from Dobson's work. Mounted onto gold card within a square mount and presented in a gilt frame. On wove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. Some slight loss of paint from age and a scratch to the upper left.
