Description

A portrait in watercolour with gum arabic of a cavalryman from the Russian army during the Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815), likely a member of one of the mounted Jager regiments. The soldier holds his sabre in his right hand, poised for action. It is possible that the original watercolour is early-nineteenth century but with some later overpainting. Presented glazed in a washline mount and a gilt-effect wooden frame with an ornate outer edge. Unsigned. On wove.

Condition

There has been a small restoration to a closed tear in the upper-left quadrant. There is also some discolouration and some surface marks, including to the mount, and some mild cockling to the substrate. There has been some restoration to some of the moulding at the edges of the frame.
