This charming watercolour scene depicts the view of Glover's Island from Richmond Hill. The island was bought by Joseph Glover in 1872, who consequently tried to sell it to Pears Soap for advertising billboards. This angered both the public and the council, with a dispute over preserving the beauty of the view from Richmond park enduring until the turn of the century. This painting would have been completed in the height of the controversy surrounding the ownership of Glover's Island and the artist clearly wanted to capture the natural landscape before it could potentially be changed by commercial advertisement.
