19th Century Oil - Wooded River Landscape in Winter

Description

A finely composed 19th Century river landscape, in oil on canvas, depicting wooded banks and a rocky stream. The bare trees evoke a sense of winter, while the artist has used careful brushwork to add movement and gentle reflection in the surface of the water. This English School setting may well be in the Highlands of Scotland, or Northern England. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

There are six small closed tear repairs to the canvas that have been restored, as shown on the reverse. There is some paint loss to the lower left corner, as well as scuffing to the corners and edges of the canvas.
