19th Century Oil - The Mayflower and the Speedwell

Description

Ships navigate tempestuous waters in this dramatic moonlit seascape. Clouds part to reveal the glowing moon, the pale light from which illuminates the cresting waves and billowing sails. The panel is indistinctly incised to the reverse, and the date 1620 can be made out. As the painting was executed in the nineteenth century, this date likely refers to the subject matter. The scene may depict the Mayflower and the Speedwell, which set sail together for the New World in 1620. The two ships attempted the crossing on two occasions; however, the Speedwell sprang leaks shortly after departing both times, and the Mayflower ultimately made the journey alone. The listing vessel in the background may be the Speedwell, its passengers appearing to reach out and call across to the Mayflower. Presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration and areas of craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Scuffs, stable cracking, and small losses to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
