A very fine and atmospheric marine landscape in oil on canvas, depicting two sailing vessels in the foreground with crew, and further vessels in the distance. The artist has employed fine brushwork with a layered palette, in order to produce a textured sea in the realist style. The subtle lighting in the composition suggests a dawn setting, with the resulting light ambience adding depth and solidity to the sailing boats. The overall arrangement is well-balanced, making this a handsome and attractive 19th Century work. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
There are some light surface abrasions and scuffing to the edges, and craquelure and foxing to the surface of the picture. There is also a small canvas repair near the centre. Overall, in good condition.
