An atmospheric 19th-century study of a sombre peasant woman, her weathered features conveying a lifetime of hardship. Illuminated by warm, golden light inspired by Dutch Golden Age painting, with soft, thoughtfully applied brushstrokes, subtle chiaroscuro, and a restrained, earthy palette that evokes intimacy and dignity. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame with acanthus running pattern. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Light discolouration to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, small chips and fine cracks. Overall, the artwork is in very good condition for its age.
