Description

This atmospheric 19th century scene depicts three figures by stone steps. A boy holding his hat by his side enters the house as a man and a girl watch from the path. The artist has captured the charismatic gestures of the figures, portraying them in the middle of a conversation. The dark night sky in the background brings attention to the illuminated characters in the centre of the scene, highlighting the charming details of their fine clothing. Signed to the lower right which appears to read 'J. Banks'. Beautifully presented in a Rococo revival gilt frame with fine foliate detail. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The canvas has been relined and there has been some restoration to the painting's surface.
