19th Century Oil - Panoramic Landscape with Figures

Description

An expansive 19th century oil inspired by the great romantic landscapes of the 18th century. Two figures are depicted, perhaps a mother and her child, greeting a smaller figure in the distance who seems to be returning home. Each aspect of the composition has been clearly considered and the artist has an evident understanding of tone and colour. Signed illegibly. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and areas of sagging to the canvas. Minor paint loss to the edges of the canvas. There have been several repairs to the canvas (as seen in photo of the reverse). The painting has been finished with a light varnish. There are also visible marks caused by a layer of bubble wrap reacting with the varnish.
