Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston (1784–1865) was a British Anglo-Irish politician who served as Prime Minister from 1855 until his death in 1865. He had also previously held the offices of Foreign Secretary and Home Secretary. He is depicted here wearing a long black coat, leaning against a red table upon which books and papers lie scattered. The work is well presented in a gilt frame with floral corner ornamentation. Unsigned. On canvas laid to board.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. The canvas has been laid to board, and inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Scuffs and losses to the frame, and the corners have been remoulded. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
