A 19th century Japanese wood block print. I cannot read the inscriptions. From an old concertina-fold book with an inscription written in a 19th century hand that says "Book presented to me by (illegible) Japanese washerman on April 29 '93 at (illegible). I can say that the paper is old and has texture like Washi paper. The paper has been embossed, I think by the use of an un-inked wood block, with a cross-hatched pattern in the background areas only. Attached only at both extreme edges left and right to backing paper which could easily be removed but I can't see any reason to remove it - you can easily see the strike-through as the backing paper is not attached top and bottom and you can peek between the sheets. Size 25 x 17 cm. The colours here are particularly rich and vibrant, as it has never been exposed to light. In excellent condition: No tears, holes or repairs. Not glued down. Unframed.
