Description

A fine nineteenth-century gouache depicting the idyllic Amalfi coastline from the Capuchin Monastery, founded in the sixteenth century in a rocky grotto overlooking the village. As today, Amalfi had been a popular destination for vacationers since Roman times. In the early nineteenth century, views from the grotto were a staple in the repertoire of artists of the region, and were often sold to tourists as souvenirs. The work is indistinctly signed to the lower right and is well presented in a bird's-eye maple frame. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some light discolouration. Scratches and abrasions to the paint surface around the margins. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Scuffs, scratches, and small losses to the frame. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.
