Description
In this finely executed gouache, the legendary founder of Carthage, Queen Dido, reclines in dramatic despair within a sumptuous palace interior. Venus, who watches over the scene in the form of a statue, had caused Dido and Aeneas to fall in love through divine inspiration. When Aeneas has to leave Carthage, the lovesick Dido commits suicide upon a pyre. His departing ships are visible through the window. Presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On paper.Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and slight undulation to the paper. Scuffs and chips to the frame. Overall, the condition is very good.
