1941 Embroidery - Jacob Sees Rachel At The Well
Description
An exquisite silk, long stitch embroidery tapestry showing Jacob seeing Rachel for the first time as he tends to her Father's flock by "Mrs Henry Thomas". The details of the faces and hands are painted directly onto the silk substrate with the rest of the image being rendered in fine long stitch embroidery. Sheep and a large dog lie on the ground at the figures feet.
The piece is presented in a fine glazed, birds-eye maple wood frame with a gilt slip. There is a label on the back with the date and artist's name and title of the piece.
On silk laid to board.Condition
The embroidery is typical for something of this age with heavy fading and discolouration. The silk substrate has deteriorated in exposed areas in the top right quadrant with heavy losses. The embroidered areas have remained perfectly intact. The frame has large losses to the two bottom corner.
