A fine example of late 18thC Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock printing. The print shows geisha relaxing on a river boat with awning, close to a jetty, along which two more geisha run, carrying a tray full of food and eating utensils. The artist has captured wonderful movement in the running geisha's billowing kimonos and the forward leaning stance of their bodies. The faces of the geisha and the body language of the geisha on the boat, nonchalantly leaning on the awning of the boat, give the scene a relaxed, joyous atmosphere of true leisure.
The woodblock is finished with the publisher's seal and artist's signature to the lower right corner and faint, handwritten kanji short hand over the top left corner of the image. The woodblock is presented in a smart, black waxed frame with glazing, a gilt internal inner window and a cream card mount.
On laid washi.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing across the surface. There is s a gole to the upper left quadrant. The frame has minor scuffing to the surface and a scratch to the internal inner window at the left edge.
