The abbey could possibly be identified as Melrose Abbey in Roxburghshire, Scotland. The artist has captured the late afternoon, shafting golden light beautifully and creates a warm and tranquil atmosphere with long shadows.
The artist has dated and signed indistinctly to the lower left corner. The painting has been presented in a glazed, gilt effect, swept frame with acanthus leaf and floral ornamentation at the corners and an off-white mount.
On laid.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame has some surface dents and scuffs and two repainted losses at the upper edge.
