Description

This wonderfully atmospheric, period watercolour shows a view of a ruined abbey with a group of children picnicking inside in a pool of dappled sunlight, shafting in through the ruined stone. The abbey could possibly be identified as Melrose Abbey in Roxburghshire, Scotland. The artist has captured the late afternoon, shafting golden light beautifully and creates a warm and tranquil atmosphere with long shadows.

The artist has dated and signed indistinctly to the lower left corner. The painting has been presented in a glazed, gilt effect, swept frame with acanthus leaf and floral ornamentation at the corners and an off-white mount.

On laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The frame has some surface dents and scuffs and two repainted losses at the upper edge.
