A humorous and highly contextual political cartoon referencing the election of 1868. J R Mowbray (Sir John Mowbray) is selected as Oxford MP (Gifted the apple by Paris, or rather the electorate of Oxford). This is an illusion to the beauty contest judged by Paris of the three competing goddesses which would lead to the Trojan war. The joke here being, that these three graying old men are hardly Venus, Juno or Minerva, also alluding to the trouble to come. The sheep, labelled "M.A." are the doctors of the university who presumably elected Mowbray.
The artist has captured a concise and cutting humour in this cartoon with excellent penmanship. The artist has inscribed at the lower edge. The drawing is unsigned and presented in a burgundy card mount.
On wove.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. The mount has some scuffing and a loss at the lower right corner.
