Description

A fine seventeenth century portrait of a nobleman, depicted half-length and wearing black armour embellished with gold studs and an elaborate lace ruff, all rendered with remarkable attention to detail. An inscription to the upper left identifies the sitter as Count John Ernest of Nassau-Siegen (1582–1617), although this appears to be a later addition. The painting is well presented in a gilt frame. Unsigned. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including some discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Repaired split down the centre of the panel. Minor wear to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age.
