A fine and delicate watercolour painting by the artist William Minshall Birchall. The scene depicts a fishing port with several boats. Title, signature and date to the lower right-hand corner. Well-presented in a card mount and in a speckled gilt effect frame. On watercolour paper.


The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, otherwise in very good condition. Some minor scuffs to the frame, including a 1.5 cm surface loss to the upper left-hand corner.

Artist Biography

William Minshall Birchall (1884-1941) was a marine painter born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, USA. The date that he and his parents arrived in England is not known, however he is recorded on the 1891 census as living in Deptford, London. So any art education he received was in England, but as yet this information is lacking. He worked mainly in watercolours and c.1914 he was living in Liscard, Cheshire, where he showed locally at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Birchall is represented in the Peabody Museum, Salem and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. His death was recorded in Hastings, Sussex, where for some years he had worked as a part-time insurance agent.
